This is a conversation with Cory Willson and Cornelis van der Kooi, who is professor of systematic theology and director of the Center for Evangelical and Reformation Theology at the Free University of Amsterdam.

His book, Christian Dogmatics, that he co-wrote with Gijsbert van den Brink, was recently translated into English. This one-volume systematic theology offers an accessible, orthodox explication of the Christian faith for students, teachers, pastors, and serious lay readers alike. Cornelis van der Kooi and Gijsbert van den Brink not only cover all the traditional themes—God, creation, sin, Jesus Christ, Scripture, and so on—but also relate those classic themes to such contemporary developments as Pentecostalism, postmodernism, and evolutionary theory.

James Bratt and Margriet van der Kooi also joined the conversation. James D. Bratt is a scholar of Abraham Kuyper, and is an emeritus professor of history at Calvin College. Margriet van der Kooi is a spiritual counselor at St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. Cory Willson is the Jake and Betsy Tuls Assistant Professor of Missiology and Missional Ministry at Calvin Theological Seminary.

Receptive Ecumenism in Neighborhoods, Soccer Fields, and Workplaces

This session will explore how to talk about differences in Catholic and Protestant worship. Every time we talk with a neighbor, teammate, or coworker from a different Christian tradition about what we do in worship and why, we are practicing liturgical theology. When marked by both conviction and humility, these conversations have rich potential for building holy friendships and deepening our worship of God. Yet they can also backfire, perpetuating stereotypes and leaving us unsure about the point of common practices. Come to this session to learn from veteran participants in both formal ecumenical dialogues and informal neighborhood conversations about how we can engage with believers across the Protestant-Catholic divide in constructive and healing ways.
