Emily Brink will lead a discussion about the Genevan Psalter of 1562.

She will offer a brief review of the original publishing phenomenon of the Genevan Psalter in 1562, the formative practice of congregational psalm singing in countless churches and homes the past five centuries, and the many translations (continuing, most recently into Korean), and then will lead an open discussion/conversation on the meaning of the “vernacular”—a hallmark of Reformed worship—with respect to the relevance of the Genevan Psalter for today.  “Translations” and the “vernacular” traditionally spoke of words. What about music?  Culture?

Emily Brink is a Resource Development Specialist for Congregational Song at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, and was editor of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal, which included 40 Genevan tunes.

Sponsored by the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies

The lecture will be inside the Meeter Center, located on the fourth floor of Hekman Library, Calvin College.
