About the Ministry Leadership Cohort

A signature cohort program of Calvin University with support from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW), the Ministry Leadership Cohort is designed to help first- and second-year Calvin University students of any major to explore how their gifts and interests intersect with the work of the church.

Purpose of the Ministry Leadership Cohort

The Ministry Leadership Cohort provides opportunities for participating students to practice leadership, build community, and love the church. 

Past participants frequently cite how the Ministry Leadership Cohort has helped them grow as individuals, foster their faith and understanding of the world and their community, and become closer in their relationship with God. Many students who participate in the program also go on to become its peer leaders and to serve in many other on-campus leadership roles.

Ministry Leadership Cohort: An Overview

Participants in the program participate in small groups with a team of staff and peer leaders on a regular basis throughout the school year, visit churches, and take leadership roles in the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship.

This program also involves a manageable series of academic courses in addition to the classes students are taking as part of their major.

Additionally, students have the opportunity to go on a pilgrimage during the spring break of their sophomore year. This trip allows them to explore the ways God is at work in various ministry contexts, and how God may be calling them to use their talents and skills to build the church. At the end of the program, students participate in a summer internship course taken after their sophomore year.

How to Apply for the Ministry Leadership Cohort

Prospective students who are interested in participating in the Ministry Leadership Cohort are encouraged to apply during the Calvin University admissions process.

We also encourage members of our community who know of high school juniors and seniors who would be a fit for the program to recommend prospective students. To nominate a student, please email cohorts@calvin.edu.
